It’s a “bring an umbrella to the polling place” kind of day, huh. Stay dry, and welcome to this June 25, 2019 edition of East & Creek, the Greenpoint newsletter.
What’s up in Greenpoint?
The New York City Dept. of Environmental Protection is doing some cleaning in the Huron St sewer this week. In an email sent to Greenpoint residents yesterday, North Brooklyn Neighbors’ Lael Goodman wrote that, “in the past when sewers have been flushed, people have reported increased vapor smells in their homes.”
Last week e&c broke the story that seven Revel moped users had been suspended for speeding through McGolrick Park. Now, e&c’s editorial stance is these mopeds are probably fine and maybe good, so long as sane people are operating them. If you do happen to witness non-sane people driving recklessly, you can call Revel’s customer service number, 855-690-9180 or email them at support@gorevel.com. (h/t Assemblyman Joe Lentol)
A new staircase opened up this past weekend at the Driggs entrance to the Bedford Ave L train stop. An existing staircase at that side of the station will close soon for further renovation. (MTA) (Meanwhile, the L train work is going really, really well, it seems.)
Disgraced comedian Louis C.K.’s surprise set last weekend in Greenpoint was greeted with a standing ovation. (Patch)
Friends of Greenpoint Library will hold a community forum on Monday, July 1 for anyone curious about future programming or construction updates — or really for anyone who loves libraries, generally.
Didja vote yet? It’s a primary election today, all for positions relating to the judicial system. Find out where to vote and who’ll be on the ballot here.
Meanwhile in New York City…
The high-profile election today is in Queens, where voters are choosing between six candidates for District Attorney. (New York Times)
A truck driver struck and killed an avid bicyclist yesterday in Manhattan. Robyn Hightman was the twelfth biker to die this year in New York City — already more than were killed in all of 2018. (New York Post)
A WNYC investigation found high levels of lead paint contamination in four New York City schools. WNYC did not identify the four schools “because in two cases the reporter didn’t have permission to test, and in two others the principals who allowed the reporter in did not have permission to do so.” (WNYC)
Of the 40 MTA bus station countdown clocks that one journalist spot-checked recently, exactly zero are functioning properly. (The City)
The Coney Island Mermaid Parade was last weekend. This year’s King Neptune and Queen Mermaid: siblings Arlo and Nora Guthrie. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
The brief life of Babe.net, the millennial/Gen-Z-oriented website formerly run out of Williamsburg, was nearly as exploitative as it was messy. (The Cut)
And last but not least, for thoses with noses: a big stinky flower will bloom soon at the New York Botanical Garden. (Curbed)
